Quick Reference for Recommended Facebook Privacy Settings

Here is a quick guide to setting the Facebook Privacy options for best protection. To change them, go to the Settings menu inside Facebook and click Privacy or click this link to go there directly – http://www.facebook.com/privacy/

Profile Settings

These settings control who can see the information about you when they click on your name and how information travels.

  1. Click on Profile on the Settings page
  2. Set everything to “Only Friends” to start. We will customize a few settings next.
  3. Set Photos Tagged of You and Videos Tagged of You to “Only Me”. This will prevent tagging from creating a news story that goes out to all of your friends.
  4. Click Save Changes.

You might consider relaxing the settings for Status and Links, Work Info and Education Info to be Everyone. This would enable non-friends to see this information.

Search Settings

These settings control what people see when they search for you on Facebook and whether your Facebook profile will appear in Google searches. The defaults are ok here, but you might want to make it harder to see information about you; however, this may make it harder for friends to find you.

  1. Click on Search on the Settings page
  2. If you want to prevent non-friends from being able to find you in search results, change Search Discovery to “Only Friends”
  3. If you want to stop Google from indexing your Facebook profile, then uncheck the box next to Public Search Listing.
  4. Click Save Changes.
